Mads, Jude, and Logan were moving their arms around, looking like they were straining to hold something, and I tilted my head to the side. They were in the back yard—more of a field, really—practicing their magic, and I was sitting out in the lounge chairs near the unlit fire pit. To me, it looked like they were miming or dancing around or something. To be honest, it looked utterly ridiculous, and I was having trouble keeping my grin in, but I didn’t want to make any of them self-conscience, so I kept my amusement to myself. They were probably too far for their magi eyes to see me clearly, but I wasn’t a very good judge of that since they were very clear from here, and anything less than shifter sight seemed like terrible vision to me.

But secretly, I’d come out here to watch the show they didn’t realize they were putting on.

I tilted my head the other way as Logan thrust his Bo staff forward, then seemed to slam his free palm on… midair. Jude and Mads nodded in encouragement, and after a few more seconds, Mads patted Lo on the shoulder. From here, it looked like he was praising him.

“Mind if I join you?” Dare’s voice caught my attention, and I turned to him with a small smile, then waved to the seat next to me.

“Of course not. What’s up with you? I thought you’d be in the garden with Eva.”

He passed me a beer, then took a sip of his own. “She’s teaching Teo how to grow a lemon tree.”

My eyebrows rose at that. “A lemon tree?”

He nodded. “Yes. Apparently, the two of them took the seeds from a lemon River was using the other day and decided to try to grow some trees. They’re doing some research on it now and picking out what pots to use for them. They have a bunch of seeds, and are even figuring out where they’re going to put the trees in winter.”

“What do you mean?”

“It gets too cold here, so they’ll have to bring the trees inside. That’s why they’re using pots instead of planting them in the ground. I think they said it’ll take two years before lemons start growing on it.” He waved it off. “I dunno, but they were really into it, so I decided to come out here and let them have their fun. Teo, El, and I planted an herb garden the other day, so now it’s Eva’s turn to do something with the little one.”

“Where’s El?”

“Bugging River in the kitchen. Not that Riv seems to mind. Pretty sure El and Teo are the only people that can get away with invading the kitchen while Riv’s in there.”

We shared a laugh. River hated when people bothered them in the kitchen. Absolutely hated it. I honestly never thought I’d see the day when someone could go in there while they were cooking. Although… “Actually, they let Jude in there all the time.”

Dare tilted his head in acknowledgment.
